In their impressive 34-year career, Pearl Jam has performed most of their original songs live. However, the band scratched two tracks off their list over the weekend at Eddie Vedder’s Ohana Festival. On Friday, they debuted the 1999 compilation track “The Whale Song,” followed by their first-ever live rendition of the Silly Surfers’ 1964 single “Gremmie Out of Control” on September 29.

The Legacy of “Gremmie Out of Control”

Originally featured on the 1996 ocean conservancy benefit album M.O.M.: Music for Our Mother Ocean, “Gremmie Out of Control” showcases guitarist Stone Gossard delivering vintage surfing catchphrases over a garage-rock riff reminiscent of Dick Dale. Last night, longtime Pearl Jam producer Brendan O’Brien stepped in to handle Gossard’s guitar parts on stage. Given the picturesque beachfront location in Dana Point, California, Pearl Jam also revived “Big Wave” for the first time since 2016.

Exploring “The Whale Song”

“The Whale Song,” which later appeared on the 2003 rarities collection Lost Dogs, was penned by then-drummer Jack Irons during the sessions for the 1998 album Yield and released in the following year on the third edition of Music for Our Mother Ocean. During the Ohana performance, Irons’ son Zach took the lead on vocals and guitar, with Vedder contributing backing vocals similar to those in the original studio version.

Insights from Jack Irons on Songwriting

In a 2022 interview with SPIN, Irons reflected on his songwriting approach, stating, “There’s a certain intimacy to having a guitar and writing words and melodies, and I didn’t like that as much as being really experimental and going weird. I’m also not a great singer or instrumentalist on a melodic instrument, so I might as well do what I think is weirdly me.”
